Press Release- One Great Day

There are estimated to be around 18,000 unpaid family carers in Telford & Wrekin (10.8% of the population).  One quarter of these provide 50 or more hours of unpaid care per week.  The economic value of the contribution made by unpaid carers in the UK is 132bn a year. There are 50,000 children and young people looking after someone in the UK.

Debbie Gibbon, Chief Executive officer at Telford and Wrekin CVS said “The emotional and physical cost of caring for a relative or friend, although often spent willingly, with love and commitment, can restrict choices for carers to live their own lives to the full .The importance of what they do is not always  recognised or valued.”

Telford Shopping Centre have chosen Telford young carers as one of their charities to benefit from “One Great Day”.  The other chosen charity is Great Ormand Street Children’s Hospital. Mrs Gibbon said “We are so pleased to be chosen by Telford Shopping Centre. We are looking forward to the event and hope to have many of our young carers with us on the day.

The event is taking place on the 19th August 2019 between 9.00 am and 6.00 pm and will comprise of lots of activities for children ranging from face- painting, arts and crafts, cake sale, go-karts and a toy tombola.

Mrs Gibbon also added we desperately seeking help to endeavour to supply toys for our tombola throughout the day and these need to comply with BSM Standards and be brand new toys and she is hoping that companies might be able to help with this fundraising task

Mrs Gibbon concluded that if a few companies were able to donate just one toy we would be able to raise a lot of funds for both the Children’s Hospital and Telford Young Carers.
